Sonoma City Opera

Sonoma City Opera presents Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio

Abduction from the Seraglio premiered on July 16, 1772 in Vienna. It is a comedy set in Turkey in the 16th century. Sonoma City Opera's production will be Donald Pippin's clever English version. Stage Director Michael Fontaine has placed it in the 1940s in the spirit of a Bob Hope/Bing Crosby road picture.

Rivers of beautiful Mozart melodies flow through this opera. Under the guidance of Musical Director and Conductor, Ryan Brown, period instruments will bring back the sound that Mozart knew.

The orchestra includes a string quartette, flute and a fortepiano. Beautiful music, zany fun, and even a reconciliation of sorts between cultures is the prize for experiencing this Mozart gem.

This is opera for the whole family!

Wednesday, August 22, is less expensive in order to encourage young people to come and be exposed to the delights of comic opera. Abduction from the Seraglio has a simple story, comedy, beautiful music, and it is about the length of an average movie.

Beethoven: Septet in E flat Major
PiernĂ: Ballet de Cour

Two extraordinary pieces begin our season. An early masterpiece from Beethoven, his Septet was the model for much of the chamber music of the Nineteenth Century, and his single most popular composition during his lifetime. The Ballet de Cour is a charming romantic gem from Gabriel Pierné. A classic French ballet in ix movements, it is choreographed by Deanna Ross and danced by the Monterey Dance Collective. Be sure to see this wonderful piece come to life on stage for the first time ever in the Monterey Bay area.

Rheinberger - Nonet in E flat Major, Op. 139
Piston - Divertimento
McAllister - Lou's Mountain Bread

A concert of three nonets, sure to please.

Joseph Rheinberger's Nonet is a model of Nineteenth Century elegance and grace. Walter Piston's Divertimento is a driving, energetic and exciting Twentieth-Century composition based on classical models. Finally, Clark McAllister's Lou's Mountain Bread is a delightful potpourri of American folk classics, and a great dessert for

this three-course musical feast.
